Remove And Install Outer Door Handle

In order to gain access to the door handle mounting bolts and the linkage the interior door panel had to be removed.

Remove and install outer door handle.

Remove the screws from the face plate behind the handle on the exterior side of the door using a screwdriver or drill driver. Loosen the exterior door handle reinforcement screw and remove the exterior door handle bezel. Remove the exterior door handle strap. Diy remove replace door s handle with hidden screws.

Remove the plug from the rear of the door. Avoid damage to the screws by using a hand screwdriver. When this is done the front of the handle will be free to move and can also be slid out of the door in a similar fashion. If any screws are exposed during this process remove them to release the lock and remove it from the door.

There may be only one mounting screw at the base of the plate. In this video we use a gm vehicle to show you have to replace a broken outer door handle. Straighten a paper clip and insert it into the hole. Any mechanisms that have to be disconnected will be apparent at this point.

Pull the exterior door handle strap outward and to the rear to release it from the exterior door handle reinforcement. Apply a bit of pressure to the paper clip to trigger a release button inside the hardware.

Once triggered the lever or lock trim can be removed from the door. Remove the door handle. Insert the lockset tailpieces through the latch bolt and screw the handles together by tightening the retaining screws.
